SUMMARY:Multibenefit Corridors: Designing Our Streets for Multisystem Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Online\n\n\nEnvironment | Academy for Sustainable Communities\n\n  \n\nAs our world continues to change the value of our public rights-of-way and associated infrastructure are increasingly being recognized for the multiple benefits they can provide to our communities. In addition to the more traditional uses of transportation and utility corridors\, green infrastructure on our streets can help clean water run-off; medians and adjacent land can provide ecosystem services and flood mitigation; design for active transportation and micromobility support sustainable transportation options reduce emissions and increase access to transit; and streetscape elements can combat urban heat to create comfortable places for people to walk\, bike\, and be outdoors. These diverse demands for our streets require an integrated approach to design and implementation that also leverage current funding opportunities. This presentation will highlight case studies where streets and infrastructure have been designed to provide these multiple and how to leverage funding for these investments. Guidance and tips for practitioners strategizing how to fund\, design\, and implement streets that capitalize on their full range of benefits will be a key theme for the presentation. \nPresenters\n\nSpencer Finich\, PE\, Alta Planning + Design\nEmily Duchon\, PLA\, Alta Planning + Design\n\nLink to Register

SUMMARY:Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis\n\nSeries: Making a Great City\n\nPresented By\nCharles Marohn\n\n\n\nJust a few decades ago\, there were more opportunities for Americans to become homeowners or find stable\, long-term rentals. Today\, affordable housing is often out of reach as cities across the country are being transformed by large amounts of investment. \nHousing is a basic building block for great cities. Charles Marohn\, who kicked off the Library’s “Making a Great City” series in 2018\, returns to Kansas City to talk about the new book\, Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis\, which he co-wrote with Daniel Herriges. \nIn Escaping the Housing Trap\, Marohn and Herriges explore the tension between housing as a financial product and housing as shelter – and how cities can fight back against the housing crisis. \nMarohn\, the founder and president of Strong Towns\, discusses the history of the U.S. housing policy and how we got to where we are today by prioritizing housing as an investment. He also shares resources that every city in America could use to meet current housing demand.

SUMMARY:Moving from World Class Trails to Fully Connected Mobility Networks
DESCRIPTION:Online\n\n\nEnvironment | Academy for Sustainable Communities\n\n  \n\nBentonville\, Arkansas takes pride in its history\, small-town charm\, and unique natural features. With its success\, come challenges. Population growth and the related pressures of housing and transportation create a daunting mix of difficulties. Today\, Bentonville leaders are looking for ways to address them. Bicycling can help. Buoyed by world-class mountain bike trails and the Razorback Greenway\, the popularity of cycling has grown tremendously in recent years\, developing a culture of outdoor recreation and interest in expanding bicycling to other parts of everyday life for residents. \nLike many cities\, Bentonville has taken all the “right” steps – securing funding to construct projects\, adopting forward-looking policies and long-term plans\, and engaging leadership across both public and private sectors. But on their own\, these steps haven’t led to rapid improvements to mobility. Today\, Bentonville leaders are using a dynamic\, accelerated approach to overcoming these challenges as they seek to construct one-third of their planned network in only two years. New strategies\, coordinated between municipal and community partners\, help pinpoint public support for mobility solutions and mobilize community-based coalitions in partnership with the city. Together\, city officials and residents are moving forward\, faster. \nPresenters\n\nKyle D. Wagenschultz\, City Thread\nJessica Pearson\, Bentonville Moves Coalition\nDavid Wright\, City of Bentonville\n\nLink to Register
